Poker Issues

So I've been doing some research ont he legality of a poker tournament and so far the answers are inconclusive. I've discovered that we can't get a licence for poker even if it's for charity, but as the law is defined, it might not be a crima anyway if no one benefits from it.

The New York State Racing and Wagering Board is very cryptic on the subject. So is the legislature. Aspiring attorneys, some advice would be greatly appreciated...

members of my sorority attempted to pull together a poker tourney as a philanthropy event last year. the main "rule" that they ran into was that players could not walk away with cash. i believe that this was a rule dictated by the school after consulting with general counsel. although they were not able to host this event, other groups did hold poker tournaments. i would recommend consulting with whomever would approve the event at fordham.

Interesting... I sent an email to the SBA treasurer, so hopefully he'll know something- thanks for the input!
