Thanks for Coming!

Hey All,

Thanks so much for coming out for our general meetings today! We had a great turnout and we're really exited to get the ball rolling on this year. Some of the things we discussed were:

-Volunteering for New York Cares on Oct 22. TO sign up, click here. Then click on "register here," then "join a team," and then "fordham law."

-Getting speakers to come to the campus

-Creating our alumni network, perhaps with the help of Jerry Nadler and Tom Suozzi (thanks, Christina!)

-Organizing a "Your Law Degree and Public Policy" panel discussion in the spring with other campus groups and inviting speakers like Fordham Law Alumna Rose Rodriguez who works for Hillary Clinton

-Having a debate on a certain issue with speakers invited by us and the Forhdam Law Republicans

-Having Andrew Spano talk about Indian Point

-Having movie nights with movies on interesting policy issues

-Having our Katrina benefit bakesale in 2 weeks

-Taking a trip to the FDR Presidential Library

-Plugging people into local political races, like the upcoming one in Westchester's 19th district and the New Jersey Gubernatorial race., as well as the campaign to take back New York's State Senate, and the race for Manhattan's surrogate court.

-Having a fundraising game/tournament of Texas Hold-em poker

-Having members of Fernando Ferrer's campaign team speak on campus (thanks, Bobby!)

-And of course, our t-shirt sale. Some slogans already under consideration include:
"Because there's no such thing as a nice piece of elephant," "I only sleep with democrats," and "better dead than red."


We're really exited about all of these things, and we're glad to have all of you on board!

Internship Opportunity

Kasirer Consulting is looking to hire a part-time intern to work closely with our junior government relations associate.
Kasirer Consulting represents a wide variety of for profit and not-for-profit companies and acts as their liaison with New York City's elected and government officials.
The ideal candidate will be extremely organized and detail oriented. He or she will want to work in a fast-paced environment and be ready to learn. They must be able to prioritize their workload and handle multiple projects simultaneously without sacrificing attention to details. A fast learner who possesses strong computer, phone, and communications skills is essential. She/he must have the ability to speak and write well. The perfect candidate would have an interest in New York City government and politics.
This is a terrific opportunity for someone looking to be involved in New York City politics -- a position where the right person with the right skills would have the opportunity to learn and grow quickly.
Responsibilities include:
0. Tracking budget requests and helping to coordinate client appearances at budget hearings at the City Council;
0. Outreach to elected officials' offices to follow up on invitations;
0. Attending and monitoring City Council hearings and public policy issues;
0. Research;
0. Drafting correspondence;
0. Filing official registrations and reports with the NYS Lobbying Commission;
0. Database management;
0. NYC Campaign Finance Board compliance follow-up work;
0. Attending community board meetings.
The position will start at three days per week -- approximately 24 hours, paid on an hourly basis and will entail working closely with senior staff throughout the City's budget process on behalf of our 16 non-profit clients, along with other project work on an as-needed basis.
The hours will increase substantially for a six to eight week period starting in mid-May 2006 through July 1, 2006, during which time the position will require a commitment of at least 30 hours per week. A commitment through July 1, 2006 is required in order to be considered for this position.
From mid-September through mid-December, the hours are as follows: Wednesdays and Thursdays 9am-6pm and one other day (either Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday) from 9am to 6pm, with one hour for lunch. The days of the week will likely be slightly more flexible starting in late January through mid-May, but will require a commitment to work 9am - 6pm at least three days a week and a minimum of four hours a day twice a week from mid-May through July 1st.
